A zinc-rich epoxy primer can play an important role in protecting steel used in industrial, marine, mining and oil-and-gas environments.
Exposure to moisture, oxygen, salt and other contaminants can eventually lead to corrosion. In coastal and marine environments, salts can accelerate that process considerably. Federal Highway Administration
A properly designed coating system can help protect steel from this exposure. In particularly demanding environments, one of the most effective places to begin is with a zinc-rich epoxy primer.
What Makes a Zinc-Rich Primer Different?
A conventional coating primarily protects steel by creating a barrier between the metal and the surrounding environment. Zinc-rich primers provide an additional form of protection.
Zinc is more electrochemically active than steel. When sufficient zinc is present and properly incorporated into a primer applied directly to prepared steel, the zinc can act sacrificially, helping provide cathodic protection to the underlying steel. This is one reason zinc-rich primers have long been used in demanding corrosion-control systems. Federal Highway Administration
In simple terms, the zinc helps sacrifice itself before the steel does.
That additional protection can be particularly valuable where a coating system may encounter moisture, salt spray, weathering or severe industrial conditions.
Why Surface Preparation Matters
Even the best coating system cannot compensate for poorly prepared steel.
Zinc-rich primers are intended to make direct contact with properly prepared ferrous metal. Rust, scale, oil, dirt, moisture and other contaminants can interfere with adhesion and with the protective function of the coating system.
Industry experience with zinc-rich coating systems has consistently demonstrated the importance of proper steel preparation. Federal Highway Administration studies, for example, have reported strong performance from zinc-rich systems applied over properly blast-cleaned steel, including in harsh marine and salt-rich environments. For this reason, surface preparation should never be treated as an afterthought. The condition of the substrate can be every bit as important as the coating selected.
Where Zinc-Rich Epoxy Primer Makes Sense
Dynamis Zinc Rich Primer is intended for steel and other ferrous metal surfaces requiring additional corrosion protection. Typical applications include heavy industrial and mining equipment, offshore platforms, marine and shipyard equipment, structural steel, machinery, manufacturing facilities, oil-and-gas operations, and steel exposed to salt water or salt spray.
These are environments where corrosion is more than a cosmetic problem. Rust and deterioration can contribute to increased maintenance, equipment downtime and premature replacement of components.
Primer Is Only Part of the Coating System
A zinc-rich primer is generally the foundation of a protective coating system rather than the finished surface by itself.
Once the properly prepared steel has been primed, a compatible epoxy topcoat can provide additional barrier protection, wear resistance and durability. Multi-layer systems using a zinc-rich primer beneath protective coatings are well established for severe corrosion environments. Federal Highway Administration
Dynamis Zinc Rich Primer can be used beneath compatible Dynamis coatings such as EPO Coat H3H and EPO Coat NS-100 when additional corrosion protection is desired beneath the finished epoxy coating.
That gives the coating system two different jobs: the zinc-rich primer helps protect the steel substrate, while the topcoat provides the durable exterior surface required for the application.
Industrial and Marine Applications
Zinc-rich epoxy primers are particularly useful anywhere steel is exposed to aggressive conditions.
Marine equipment and offshore structures encounter salt water and salt spray. Mining and industrial equipment may experience moisture, abrasion and chemical exposure. Structural steel and machinery may spend years exposed to changing atmospheric conditions.
There is no single coating system that is right for every exposure, which is why the substrate, environment, expected service conditions and compatible topcoat all need to be considered together.
Dynamis Zinc Rich Primer
Dynamis Zinc Rich Primer is formulated as a corrosion-protection foundation for properly prepared steel and other ferrous metals. At Dynamis’ standard test temperature of 75°F, the product has an approximate 2-hour working time and a 30-minute sweat-in period before proceeding with the compatible coating system.
For severe industrial, marine, mining, offshore and other corrosive environments, beginning with the right primer can substantially improve the overall coating strategy.
