Proper dynamic balancing is important for the performance and longevity of electric motors, fans, blowers, generators, pump impellers, and other rotating equipment. Even relatively small imbalances can contribute to vibration, bearing wear, noise, and premature equipment failure.
Dynamis Epoxy’s EPO Dynaweight family provides a practical solution for correcting imbalance by placing a dense, two-component epoxy balancing compound directly where additional weight is required.
Used by motor repair shops, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and industrial maintenance facilities, EPO Dynaweight offers four formulations with different working times and curing characteristics.
What Is an Epoxy Dynamic Balancing Compound?
An epoxy dynamic balancing compound is a two-component material used to add controlled amounts of weight to rotating components.
Unlike conventional balancing methods that may require drilling, welding, or attaching separate metal weights, EPO Dynaweight allows technicians to place balancing material directly at the appropriate location.
The compound is mixed, applied to a properly prepared surface, and allowed to cure, creating a durable balancing mass.
This approach is useful in motor manufacturing, equipment rebuilding, industrial maintenance, and applications requiring precise weight placement.
Choosing the Right EPO Dynaweight Formulation
Selecting the appropriate formulation depends primarily on the working time needed for balancing adjustments and the desired initial hard-set time.
Original EPO Dynaweight — Standard Formulation
The Original EPO Dynaweight is a proven, general-purpose epoxy balancing compound with more than 50 years of field history.
Its extended working time gives technicians flexibility when positioning and adjusting balancing material.
- Working time at 75°F: Approximately 2–2½ hours
- Initial hard set: Approximately 12 hours
- Mix ratio: 1:1 by volume
- Available kits: 2 lb. and 15 lb.
EPO Dynaweight BAL-VI — Extended Working Time
BAL-VI is a non-zinc formulation designed for applications requiring additional time for balancing adjustments.
It is particularly useful for fans, blowers, pump impellers, and larger or more involved rotating assemblies.
- Working time at 75°F: Approximately 2–2½ hours
- Initial hard set: Approximately 6–8 hours
- Mix ratio: 1:1 by volume or weight
- Available kit: 2 lb.
EPO Dynaweight BAL-I-FS — Faster-Setting Formulation
BAL-I-FS provides a shorter working period and faster initial hard set than the standard formulations.
It is useful for repair shops and production operations where technicians need enough time to position the balancing material but want to reduce the time required for initial hardening.
- Working time at 75°F: Approximately 45–60 minutes
- Initial hard set: Approximately 90 minutes
- Mix ratio: 1:1 by volume or weight
- Available kits: 2 lb. and 16 lb.
EPO Dynaweight BAL-XV-FS — Rapid Initial Hard Set
BAL-XV-FS has the shortest working time and fastest initial hard set in the EPO Dynaweight family.
This formulation is designed for time-sensitive balancing applications where material placement can be completed within a relatively short working period.
- Working time at 75°F: Approximately 15–20 minutes
- Initial hard set: Approximately 30 minutes
- Mix ratio: 1:1 by volume or weight
- Available kits: 2 lb. and 16 lb.
Preparing the Surface for Balancing Compound
Proper surface preparation is essential for successful application.
Before applying EPO Dynaweight, the area receiving the compound should be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, dirt, and other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
The technician should also determine the appropriate balancing location and required correction using established balancing procedures.
Always consult the product instructions and applicable equipment requirements before application.
Mixing EPO Dynaweight Correctly
EPO Dynaweight products are two-component epoxy systems consisting of Part A and Part B.
Original EPO Dynaweight is mixed in equal proportions by volume. Its dark gray Part A and white Part B should be thoroughly kneaded together until a uniform medium-gray color is achieved, without streaks or unmixed material.
BAL-I-FS, BAL-VI, and BAL-XV-FS use a 1:1 mix ratio by volume or weight. Component colors vary by formulation.
For all formulations, thorough mixing is essential. Follow the instructions supplied with the specific product, use appropriate protective gloves, and avoid direct skin contact.
Do not prepare more mixed material than can be positioned and adjusted within the applicable working time.
Applying the Compound and Making Balancing Adjustments
Once the material has been thoroughly mixed, place it at the predetermined balancing location on the clean, dry, properly prepared rotating component.
Application Tip: After the mixed EPO Dynaweight has been placed in the desired balancing location, lightly dampen a gloved fingertip or applicator with a small amount of clean water for the final pressing and shaping. This helps prevent the compound from sticking to the glove or tool while allowing the technician to press and smooth it into place. The surface receiving the compound must be clean and dry before initial placement. Do not add water to the epoxy mixture.
During the available working period, technicians can position and adjust the material as required by the balancing procedure.
Working times vary substantially among the Dynaweight formulations. The faster-setting products require more advance preparation so the balancing operation can be completed before the material begins to harden.
After application, allow the compound to cure under the conditions specified in the product instructions.
Understanding Working Time, Hard Set, and Full Cure
These terms describe different stages of the curing process.
Working time is the approximate period during which mixed material remains workable for placement and adjustment.
Initial hard set indicates that the material has hardened substantially but does not necessarily mean that full cure has been achieved.
Full cure refers to the later stage at which the material has developed its specified cured properties.
Dynamis Epoxy uses approximately 75°F as its standard room-temperature reference condition. Higher temperatures generally shorten working and curing times, while lower temperatures extend them.
The BAL formulations list an approximate seven-day full cure. The shorter initial hard-set periods should not be interpreted as guaranteed readiness for equipment operation.
Always follow the specific product’s instructions and the equipment manufacturer’s requirements before returning balanced equipment to service.
Selecting a Balancing Compound for Your Application
The best EPO Dynaweight formulation depends on the size and type of rotating component, the amount of balancing adjustment needed, the available working time, and the applicable curing requirements.
Dynamis Epoxy manufactures the EPO Dynaweight family for industrial motor balancing, fan and blower balancing, equipment manufacturing, and maintenance applications.
